Viareggio: Carnival of allegorical carriages

Viareggio: Carnival of allegorical carriages

Among the many landmarks of the Tuscany region, Carnival in Viareggio holds the place of honor. One of the largest and most famous carnivals in the world, with thousands of people participating annually - Italians and a bunch of tourists.

The carnival itself was born in 1873, as a masquerade not satisfied with the excessively high taxes of wealthy citizens and in recent years its main distinguishing feature has become large mobile allegorical wagons - platforms. Platforms along the sidewalk of Viareggio offer large caricatures of papier-mâché that make it easy to get to know well-known characters from the world of politics, culture and business. These unusual mechanisms that execute heavy movements and produce a grandiose stage effect annually exemplify the perfect combination of the creative powers of the masters of the country with new technologies.
All the while, the carnival is accompanied by street costumes with music and masks.

These holidays date back to the so-called “veglioni di colore” of the 1920s, when women were to be dressed in dresses of certain colors, while men remained in tuxedos; decorations, candy, and streamers of serpentine also had to match a certain color code.

The city's most popular establishments were the perfect place for this kind of celebration, making this carnival even more mysterious. Visiting Viareggio, a renowned balneological and tourist resort, rich in libertarian and deco architecture, is another option to get acquainted with Versilia and its fascinating towns Lido di Camaiore and Forte dei Marmi ( Forte dei Marmi), not forgetting that Viareggio can be easily reached to such wonderful cities as Pisa or Lucca.
